Wind power is the world’s fastest-growing energy source and “wind farms” are sprouting up from India to the American Midwest. The amount of energy generated by wind has nearly tripled between 1995 and 1999. The set of blades turned by the wind is connected to a generator or alternator that can produce varying amounts of electricity. Each large wind turbine can generate enough energy for about 300 homes. Thus, windmills have the potential to provide a significant energy in areas that have consistently high wind speed and little turbulence. The placement of windmills should be placed in areas that minimize the threat to bird populations.
