Biogas Digester

How Does it Work?

Biogas digesters exploit a naturally occurring microbial process that breaks down organic waste, like manure, into a biogas that is 60-70% methane. The high concentration of methane makes biogas an excellent source of renewable energy. Inside the anaerobic (no air) chamber, the methane gas that would normally be released into the atmosphere is trapped in a reservoir. When ignited, methane gas generates heat that can be used for heating, lighting, or cooking.

The Dividends of Biogas:

Healthy Planet

Biogas burns methane gas from waste that would otherwise release into the atmosphere, rendering it 21 times less potent at trapping atmospheric heat. It also limits animal waste run off into the rivers, eliminates the use of fossil fuels, and limits deforestation by replacing wood as an energy source.

Healthy Income

The by-product of biogas extraction, a solid effluent, retains 90% of its useful nutrients rendering it a natural fertilizer for use and sale on small farms. It also displaces costs from chemical fertilizers, creating a sustainable model for crop growth. It\'s a cheap and reliable source of alternative energy!

Healthy People

Biogas significantly reduces airborne pathogens from leaving livestock waste near homes. It also limits the instance of respiratory disease, eye infections, and the chance of burns by replacing open fires as a cooking source.
